majutsukaiSo, I figured I'd make a post about this, since I've been itching to make more of these things, but I lack only the motivation and inspiration to do so.
Now, I imagine that most, if not all, of my friends consider themselves gamers. And most, if not all, of those gamers are probably at least a little bit excited about Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I think it promises to be a pretty epic event in the history of gaming, with very little fear of overstatement.
So, anybody who's been following the information as it's been released on the Smash Bros. DOJO site has probably already gone about the business of picking favorite characters/stages/items, etc. At least, if you're anything like me, you have. That's why I figured I'd start a little art project, to quench the proverbial fanboy fire, so to speak. The idea actually came from a photoshopped-up image I saw in one of my Gaia friends' signatures, and I figured I kinda wanted to do something similar. The end result was this:
It now sits proudly in my Gaia signature, as well as in my signature on the UGOI forums. The thing is, it was so damn fun to make, I figured I'd make another, just for kicks. The result:
Once again, I had a lot of fun making this, and I learned a lot of tricks in Photoshop while tossing these things together; not to mention the fact that, aesthetically, I really liked how they turned out. So I decided I'd make a series out of them. Here are the images I've done since then:
I'm not limiting myself to just characters, though it would be pretty cool to have a library of every character on hand. I also think it would be cool to make some of items, stages, assist trophies, and various other game features that might merit depiction.
So, why am I posting here about this?
Simple. I want to take requests.
Is there a character, or maybe a stage/item/assist trophy/game feature you want to see in one of these? If so, comment here with the details. So long as at least one screenshot of it exists on the Smash Bros. DOJO website, it's fair game (assuming that any GOOD screenshots of it exist.)
You may notice that there are some common threads between the images; I usually start out by adding a bloom effect to the original image, to sort of make it "glow". I'll then follow up with any number of other effects that I think make it look good, then add a sidebar effect (I'll explain those in the next paragraph), then top it off with a scanline effect before adding the character's emblem, and their name in that fancy font I found, plus the Super Smash Bros. Brawl logo in the top corner. I kinda want to stick to these steps, so expect something along those lines if you request one. I don't want you to interpret that as me saying you can't make any suggestions; far from it, if you have an idea for how I should make them look better, by all means, include it.
When I made the Lucas one, I had just learned how to do a Lightning effect, and I wanted to incorporate it into the image; it ended up serving the purpose of filling up the sort of blank space on that side of the image, where there wasn't anything else interesting to occupy it. I continued that pattern with the rest of them, using a different effect on each of them; if you hadn't noticed, I based each of them off of a particular element (Samus's is Light, if you couldn't tell.). This sidebar effect is something that I want to include in all my images; I WANT to be able to keep making unique ones, but if I run out of elements, or if I come across a character that seems to fit better with an element I've already used, then I'll repeat them. For example, I imagine that if I ever make a Mario one, he'll probably have the Fire effect, like on Ike's. You can request a particular one, existing or no, if you like, but keep in mind that I want to try out new effects. Some elements I've been considering are Earth, Metal, and Darkness (if I can ever work out how to do that one. >.>); if you have any more ideas for elements, feel free to put them forward.
The logos are sometimes a bit difficult to make; I haven't yet encountered one that I couldn't reproduce with a little bit of ingenuity, but I have to accept the possibility that there will eventually be one. Some of them I even have to redraw by hand, so they may end up looking a little bit wonky; others are practically ready-made on the internet, so they look very smooth and professional. It varies all over the board.
I use the screenshots from the Smash Bros. DOJO website, and their dimensions tend to vary a bit, so the exact dimensions of these images may also vary. I can make smaller versions (75% or 50% original dimensions) if you want or need it, but I DO have to actually go back into Photoshop to do this, since the scanlines don't resize very well, so I have to reapply them AFTER the resizing to get it to look right. If you want a resize, request it.
As a final note, feel free to gank any of the ones I've already made (EXCEPT my Lucas one. That one's mine. >E). You don't have to even give credit, but it would be appreciated.
I might as well field this question before it inevitably comes up: What are these things? What use could I possibly have for them? Well, I use them as forum signature decorations, but you could use them on your profiles, your websites, just get them to look at, do whatever the hell you want to do with them. I just make them because they're fun to make. ^-^
Also, I'll probably be making a mirror post on the ugoi Forums, so I may periodically update with requests I've gotten from there. If I get mirror requests, I'm perfectly fine with making multiple versions; in fact, it'll give me the opportunity to pick different screenshots, since I'm sometimes torn on which one to use. (I'd like it if you left the decision of what screenshot to use up to me, but if there's one in particular that you absolutely have your heart set on, you can request it, and I'll see what I can do.)

I'm actually not all that hyped about SSBB, but I was never really hyped about the others either. I like the games, but there's only so much you can do with SSB.
