majutsukaiIt's no secret that music is the main thing I use YouTube for.
So I took a look at a few of my favorite videos today.
ARE WE NOTICING A PATTERN, GUYS?
I keep looking for reasons not to hate these companies for looking out for their intellectual property, and they keep handing me reasons that I should. This is an instance in which it hurts the consumer.
Do you seriously think YouTube presence hurts record sales? News flash: why in bloody hell would I buy a record if I haven't gotten to listen to the songs on it?
And you know what I do if I want to listen to a song, but it's been removed from YouTube?
What recourse is left?
I download it.
Yeah, that's right. Copyright claims on YouTube encourage piracy. YouTube is an alternative to piracy. Way to go, guys.
It never ceases to shock me just how out of touch big businesses are when it comes to digital media. They perceive everything as an imaginary attack on their sales, and they viciously tear them down. And it's the fan community that comes out the worse for it, every. Single. Time.
Yes, I am still bitter about Crimson Echoes. No, I will not get over it.
I'll grant that, while Crimson Echoes was an example of Fair Use, YouTube music videos are not. But once again, this does not mean that the media in question is harmful, or in fact, not helpful, to their business.
You want an example? ROMs are a clear violation of copyright law, as they utterly lack transformativeness. However, I would never have purchased copies of games like Chrono Trigger if I had not played them emulated first. ROMs act as a try-before-you-buy sort of thing for me.
And, dur hur, don't even get me started on the video game industry whining about used game trade.
Just... ughhhh.
Make a better effort to understand your consumers, guys. You're making yourselves irrelevant.
